Ahir Setu: Building a Verified Digital Home for the Ahir Samaj

By Rohit Dangar · Nov 1, 2026 · 5 min read · Ahir Setu is my own project; I am its founder and developer.

આહીર સેતુ — આહીર સમાજનું પોતાનું ડિજિટલ ઘર.

On 31 October 2026, Ahir Setu went live at ahirsetu.com. It is a verified digital home for the Ahir samaj: a place where members of the community register, get verified, and receive a digital ID card, all in Gujarati first. This post is the story of why I built it, what works today, and what is coming next.

Ahir Setu: Gujarati home page, the services list (Ahir Setu card and ID, verification, scheme finder, member directory), the government scheme finder, and Rohit Dangar's own Ahir Setu ID card AS-GJ-0000-0001

Why the community needed it

Our samaj is spread across hundreds of villages in Gujarat, and across cities in India and abroad. Today most of the community's online life runs through WhatsApp groups. They are great for quick news, but they have real limits. Messages scroll away. Anyone with a link can join, so nobody can be sure who is actually a member. And if you want to find someone from your native village, or a doctor or a teacher from the community, you end up asking in group after group.

I wanted one trusted place where every member is real, where you can find your people, and where the community can grow its own services over time. That place needed three things: verification, a simple identity for each member, and the Gujarati language at its heart.

What is live today

Ahir Setu is run by a non-profit community organisation, and I designed and built the platform. Here is what works on ahirsetu.com right now:

Rohit Dangar's Ahir Setu digital ID card: AS-GJ-0000-0001, verified founder member, Junagadh, with QR code to verify

My own Ahir Setu ID: AS-GJ-0000-0001, founder member. It is a community card, not a government ID.

How it is built

Ahir Setu is a Next.js web app served from Cloudflare's global network, so pages open quickly even on a slow mobile connection. Member data lives in Supabase, a managed Postgres database, with row-level security so each member can only change their own record and admins only see what their role allows. The app is a PWA (progressive web app): one codebase that works in the browser and installs on Android and iPhone like a native app.

The village list deserves its own mention. A village picker is only useful if the names are right, and I had one firm rule: no guessed or machine-transliterated Gujarati names. So the Gujarati names come from the Government of India's official Local Government Directory (LGD), matched village by village using the official LGD codes. Where the official list has no Gujarati name for a village, Ahir Setu shows the English name rather than invent one. Today more than 12,800 villages appear in Gujarati.

Privacy comes first

A community platform asks people for personal information, so trust has to be built in from day one:

The full policy, in Gujarati and English, is on ahirsetu.com/privacy.

What is coming next

The site already shows the services that will follow, clearly labelled coming soon. They are not live yet:

The plan is to launch each service only when it is ready and useful, so that every part of Ahir Setu works as well as the verified registration does today.

Try it

If you are part of the Ahir samaj, open ahirsetu.com on your phone, tap “Install App”, and register. If you are curious about how it was designed and built, the Ahir Setu project page has the full case study.
